Work From Sussex Careers is a small, locally run job board, and we'd rather explain how we handle your information in plain terms than hide it behind legal jargon. This page covers everyone who uses the site: job seekers browsing and applying for roles, and employers posting them.

If anything here isn't clear, or you'd like to ask us anything about your information, just get in touch. Our contact details are at the bottom of this page.

Who we are

Work From Sussex Careers is the organisation responsible for this website and the information collected through it. For data protection purposes, we're what's known as the "data controller."

What we collect, and why

We only collect what we actually need to run the site. Here's everything, broken down by where it comes from.

If you sign up for job alerts

The pop-up on our site asks for your email address if you'd like to hear about new roles. That's the only thing we ask for there. We use it to send you updates, and for nothing else. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send, or by contacting us directly.

If you're an employer posting a job

When you submit a job through our form, we collect your email address, your company name, and the details of the role itself (job title, location, salary, description and so on). If you're on a plan that includes a logo, we also store the image file you upload.

We use this information to create and manage your listing, to get in touch if we need anything before it goes live, and to keep a record of what you've paid for. We keep submitted job details for as long as your listing is live, and for a reasonable period afterwards in case of any dispute or query, after which we remove them.

If you pay for a listing

Payments are handled entirely by Stripe, a payment processor used by millions of businesses. We never see or store your card details ourselves. Stripe processes that information under its own privacy policy, which you can find at stripe.com/gb/privacy.

General site usage

Like most websites, we want to understand roughly how people use the site so we can improve it, such as which pages are popular and whether people find jobs easily. Where we use an analytics tool for this (such as Google Analytics), it may collect information like your approximate location, the device and browser you're using, and which pages you visit. This is used in aggregate to understand overall usage, not to identify you individually.

Worth knowing: where we use analytics or any similar tool that isn't strictly necessary for the site to function, we'll ask for your consent first, in line with UK cookie rules, rather than assume it.

Cookies and similar technology

Our site uses a small amount of browser storage to remember simple things, like whether you've already dismissed the job alerts pop-up, so we don't show it to you again unnecessarily. This is strictly necessary for the site to work sensibly and doesn't identify you personally.

If we add analytics or other tools in future that aren't strictly necessary, we'll ask for your consent before using them, and you'll be able to change your mind at any time.

When you apply for a job

This is an important one to understand. When you click "Apply" on a listing, we either send you to the employer's own application page, or open an email addressed to them. Either way, from that point on, you're dealing directly with that employer, not with us.

Any CV, cover letter, or personal information you then send is received and used by that employer under their own privacy policy, not ours. We'd encourage you to check how a company handles applications before sending across sensitive information, the same as you would with any job application.

Who we share information with

We don't sell your information to anyone, ever. We do work with a small number of trusted service providers to actually run the site:

  • Supabase, who provide the database that stores job listings and submissions
  • Stripe, who process employer payments
  • An analytics provider such as Google, where used, to help us understand site usage

These providers only use your information to help us provide the service, under their own security and confidentiality obligations.

How long we keep information

We keep job alert email addresses until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove them. We keep employer submissions for as long as a listing is live, plus a reasonable period afterwards for our own records, after which they're deleted. We don't keep information for longer than we have a genuine reason to.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

  • Ask what information we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct anything that's inaccurate
  • Ask us to delete your information
  • Object to how we're using it, or ask us to restrict that use
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where consent is what we're relying on

To use any of these rights, just contact us using the details below. If you're ever unhappy with how we've handled your information, you also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's independent regulator, at ico.org.uk.

Keeping your information secure

We take reasonable steps to keep your information secure, including relying on established, reputable providers (Supabase and Stripe) who maintain their own strong security standards. No system is ever completely without risk, but we don't collect more than we need, and we don't hold on to it longer than necessary.

Changes to this policy

We may update this page from time to time, for example if we start using a new tool or change how we collect information. We'll update the date at the top when we do. It's worth checking back occasionally if you want to stay informed.
